Description

Delight in these charming Cake in a Jar treats—individual flavorful cakes baked right inside mason jars, perfect for portion control, gifting, or a fun twist on traditional cake serving. Using any boxed cake mix and your favorite frosting, these jars combine ease and creativity for a 40-minute bake time yielding six delicious servings.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake

  • 1 box of cake mix (any flavor)
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/3 cup of vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs

For the Frosting

  • 1/2 cup of frosting (any flavor)

Other

  • 6-8 small mason jars or any glass jars with lids
  • Cooking spray or butter (for greasing jars)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Jars: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease the inside of each mason jar with cooking spray or butter to prevent the cake from sticking during baking.
  2. Mix the Batter: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cake mix, water, vegetable oil, and eggs. Stir well following the cake mix box instructions to achieve a smooth batter.
  3. Fill the Jars: Pour the prepared cake batter into each greased mason jar, filling them halfway to leave room for the cake to rise fully as it bakes.
  4. Bake the Cakes: Arrange the jars upright on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes. Check doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center; if it comes out clean, the cakes are done.
  5. Cool the Cakes: Allow the cakes to cool completely inside the jars before adding frosting, ensuring the frosting won’t melt and slide off.
  6. Frost the Cakes: Top each cooled cake with frosting. You can pipe it on for a polished look or gently spread it using a spoon. Optionally, layer some frosting and cake pieces inside the jars for a decorative layered dessert.
  7. Seal and Serve: Place the lids on the jars after frosting. Serve these charming individual cakes directly in their jars for a perfect single-serving dessert presentation or store them for later enjoyment.

Notes

  • Use any boxed cake mix and frosting flavor to customize the recipe.
  • Make sure to grease jars thoroughly to avoid sticking.
  • Do not fill jars more than halfway to prevent overflow during baking.
  • Cakes must be completely cool before frosting to avoid melting.
  • This method is perfect for portable single servings or gifting.
  • Glass jars withstand oven heat well but ensure jars are oven-safe.
