Ingredients
Scale
Meat
- 16 ounces ground beef
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
Vegetables & Aromatics
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder or 2 cloves garlic, minced
Dairy & Bread
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 4 slices white American or Provolone cheese
- 4 rolls
Liquids & Sauces
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 4 ounces beef broth
Thickening Agent
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
Instructions
- Prepare Ground Beef: Heat a sauté pan over medium heat. Add the ground beef along with salt and black pepper. Cook and crumble the beef until it is browned and cooked through. Remove from the pan and set aside.
- Saute Vegetables: In the same pan, add the unsalted butter. Once melted, add the diced onion and green bell pepper. Sauté until the vegetables are lightly browned and the onions have become translucent.
- Combine Ingredients: Return the cooked ground beef to the pan with the sautéed vegetables. Add garlic powder or minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and beef broth. Stir the mixture and cook for about one minute to blend the flavors.
- Thicken Sauce: Sprinkle the cornstarch over the mixture and stir well to distribute. Continue cooking until the sauce thickens, adding a little water if the sauce is too thick to your preference.
- Add Cheese: Place the slices of white American or Provolone cheese over the top of the beef mixture. Allow the cheese to melt completely over the hot mixture.
- Assemble: Spoon the cheesy beef mixture generously onto the rolls. Serve immediately while hot for a delicious cheesesteak-inspired sloppy joe experience.
Notes
- You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
- For a spicier version, add a dash of hot sauce or some chopped jalapeños when sautéing the vegetables.
- Using fresh garlic instead of garlic powder enhances the flavor.
- To save time, prepare the beef broth mixture ahead and store it refrigerated for up to 2 days.
- Serve with pickles or a side of coleslaw for added crunch and freshness.
