Description

Cheesy Onion Crisps are a deliciously crispy baked snack featuring thinly sliced onions combined with sharp cheddar and Parmesan cheeses, and seasoned with garlic powder, paprika, and a touch of black pepper. These golden, bubbly crisps make a perfect appetizer, snack, or a crunchy topping for soups and salads. They are easy to prepare and bake to perfection in under 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Onion Mixture

  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or melted butter

Cheese and Seasonings

  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Garnish (Optional)

  • Chopped chives or parsley

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and promote even baking.
  2. Toss onions with oil and seasonings: In a large bowl, toss the thinly sliced onions with olive oil or melted butter until evenly coated. Add the shredded cheddar, grated Parmesan, all-purpose flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly to ensure the onions are well coated with the cheese and seasonings.
  3. Shape the crisps: Spoon small mounds of the onion and cheese mixture onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing each about 2 inches apart. Using the back of a spoon, gently flatten each mound slightly to help them bake evenly and form crisp shapes.
  4. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake the crisps for 15 to 18 minutes, or until they turn golden, bubbly, and have lightly browned edges.
  5. Cool and garnish: Remove the crisps from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, allowing them to firm up. Carefully transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. Garnish with chopped chives or parsley if desired before serving.

Notes

  • These crisps make a great snack, appetizer, or crunchy topping for soups and salads.
  • Ensure the onions are thinly sliced for even baking and crispiness.
  • For an extra kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper flakes to the seasoning mix.
