Description

Chopped Cheese Sandwich is a flavorful and satisfying New York deli classic featuring seasoned ground beef, melted cheese, and fresh toppings all packed in a soft hoagie roll. This easy-to-make comfort food combines juicy sautéed beef, sautéed veggies, melty cheese, crisp lettuce, ripe tomatoes, creamy avocado, and optional crispy bacon, making it a perfect lunch or dinner option.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat & Cheese

  • 1 pound Ground Beef (or ground turkey/chicken)
  • 4 slices American or Cheddar Cheese (or your favorite cheese)
  • 4 slices Beef or Turkey Bacon (optional)

Vegetables & Toppings

  • 1 medium Onion (sliced)
  • 1 cup Bell Peppers (red/green) (sliced)
  • 2 cloves Garlic (minced)
  • 1 cup Lettuce & Tomatoes (for freshness)
  • 1 medium Avocado (sliced)

Condiments & Bread

  • 2 hoagie rolls or Soft Rolls
  • 2 tablespoons Ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Mayo (or chipotle mayo)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bacon (if using): In a skillet over medium heat, cook the bacon slices until crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels. Set aside.
  2. Sauté the vegetables: In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and bell peppers. Cook over medium heat until softened and slightly caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Add the minced garlic and sauté for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Cook the ground beef: Push the vegetables to the side of the skillet and add the ground beef. Break it apart with a spatula and cook until browned and fully cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. Mix the beef with the sautéed vegetables evenly. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Melt the cheese: Tear or fold the cheese slices into smaller pieces and spread over the cooked beef mixture in the skillet. Cover the skillet and allow the cheese to melt completely, about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Prepare the rolls and condiments: Split the hoagie rolls horizontally but keep them attached on one side. Spread ketchup and mayo (or chipotle mayo) on the inside of each roll.
  6. Assemble the sandwich: Using a spatula, scoop a generous amount of the cheesy chopped beef mixture into each roll. Top with fresh lettuce, sliced tomatoes, avocado slices, and crispy bacon if using.
  7. Serve immediately: Serve your chopped cheese sandwiches warm for a delicious, comforting meal.

Notes

  • Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner version.
  • Use chipotle mayo for a smoky, spicy flavor twist.
  • If you don’t have hoagie rolls, soft sub rolls or burger buns work well.
  • Adding pickles or hot sauce can enhance the sandwich further.
  • To keep the sandwich warm longer, wrap it in foil before serving.
