Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2.5 teaspoons instant yeast (1 packet, 21 grams)
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup melted butter, cooled
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus up to 2 tablespoons extra as needed)
  • 1 tablespoon blue food coloring

Filling

  • 1 cup crushed Oreos
  • 2 tablespoons cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup softened butter (for spreading)

Baking and Resting

  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream (for baking dish)

Icing

  • 8 ounces cream cheese (1 package)
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • Additional crushed Oreos and chocolate chip cookies (such as Chips Ahoy) for topping

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In the stand mixer with a paddle attachment, combine 1 cup warm milk, 1/2 cup sugar, and yeast. Mix until well combined and let sit for 5 minutes until the yeast bubbles and thickens.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients: Add the melted butter and beaten eggs to the yeast mixture and mix on medium-low speed until combined.
  3. Add Flour and Knead: Gradually add 4 cups flour one cup at a time until a sticky dough forms. Switch to the hook attachment and knead on medium-low speed until well combined. If the dough is too sticky, add up to 2 tablespoons of flour, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough does not stick to the bowl.
  4. Add Coloring: Add 1 tablespoon blue food coloring and knead for about 1 minute until dough is uniformly colored.
  5. First Rise: Place dough in a bowl, cover with cling wrap and a towel, and let rise for 1 hour in a warm place.
  6. Prepare Filling: While dough rises, crush Oreos and combine with cinnamon and brown sugar to make the filling mix.
  7. Shape Rolls: After rising, punch down dough to release air, roll on a floured flat surface into a square. Spread softened butter evenly over dough, then sprinkle the Oreo-cinnamon mixture on top.
  8. Form Rolls: Roll dough lengthwise tightly. Using unflavored floss, cut into 1.5 inch pieces. You should have about 12 rolls.
  9. Second Rise: Pour heavy whipping cream into a baking dish and place rolls in the dish. Let rest for 30 minutes to rise again.
  10. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  11. Bake Rolls: Bake rolls at 375°F for 20 minutes until golden and cooked through.
  12. Make Icing: In a stand mixer bowl with a balloon whisk, beat softened butter, cream cheese, and powdered sugar until smooth and creamy.
  13. Frost Rolls: Spread cream cheese icing generously over warm cinnamon rolls. Garnish with additional crushed Oreos and chocolate chip cookies.
  14. Serve: Serve the Cookie Monster Cinnamon Rolls warm, and enjoy this colorful, sweet treat.

Notes

  • Ensure milk is warm, not hot, to properly activate yeast.
  • Add flour gradually to avoid a dry dough; the dough should be slightly sticky but manageable.
  • Unflavored floss works better than a knife for cleanly slicing cinnamon rolls without squashing them.
  • You can substitute different cookie toppings to customize the icing garnish.
  • For extra flavor, you can let the rolls rise a bit longer during the second rest if time allows.
