Ingredients
Scale
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons sugar
- ¾ teaspoon sea salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1 ¾ cups full-fat Greek yogurt
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
Optional Toppings
- Everything bagel seasoning
- Poppy seeds
- Sesame seeds
- Flaky sea salt
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the bagels.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, sugar, and sea salt. Use a whisk or fork to mix the ingredients thoroughly.
- Add Greek Yogurt: Add the full-fat Greek yogurt to the dry mixture and mix well. The dough will be crumbly or clumpy at this point. Pull the mixture together into one cohesive ball and transfer it to a lightly floured surface. If it feels dry, add one teaspoon of water or a small extra spoonful of yogurt.
- Knead Dough and Divide: Knead the dough approximately 10 to 15 times until it becomes smooth. Then, divide the dough into six even pieces by cutting or pulling them apart.
- Shape Bagels: Roll each piece into a thin rope about 1 inch or just less in diameter. Form each rope into a circle and press the ends together to seal, creating the traditional bagel shape. Place the formed bagels onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Apply Egg Wash and Toppings: In a small bowl, whisk the egg thoroughly to create an egg wash. Brush this wash evenly over each bagel, covering all visible surfaces, including the middle hole. Sprinkle optional toppings like everything bagel seasoning, poppy seeds, sesame seeds, or flaky sea salt as desired.
- Bake the Bagels: Bake the bagels in the preheated oven for 19 to 23 minutes until golden brown. Avoid overcooking to maintain softness inside. Once baked, allow the bagels to cool slightly before serving, though they are delicious warm.
Notes
- If the dough feels too dry, add a teaspoon of water or a small extra spoonful of yogurt to reach the right consistency.
- Be careful not to overbake the bagels to ensure they stay soft and moist inside.
- You can customize the toppings according to your preference or omit them entirely for plain bagels.
- Using full-fat Greek yogurt contributes to the bagels’ soft texture and rich protein content.
- These bagels do not require yeast, making the preparation faster and suitable for a quick homemade bread option.
