Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 2½ cups whole wheat flour (300 grams)
- 1 large egg (50 grams)
- 1 cup peanut butter (270 grams)
- 1 cup water (227 grams)
- 2 tablespoons honey (43 grams)
Frosting Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons peanut butter (34 grams)
- 1 tablespoon honey (21 grams)
- â…“ cup cornstarch (37 grams; can also use potato starch or arrowroot powder)
- 3-4 tablespoons hot water (43-57 grams)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. This prepares your baking surface to ensure the dog treats don’t stick.
- Mix Dough: In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and egg. Add the peanut butter, water, and honey, stirring until a stiff, firm dough forms. The dough will be sticky, so use your hands or a mixer with a paddle attachment to combine thoroughly.
- Roll Dough: Lightly flour your work surface and roll out the dough to about ½-inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut out fun shapes for the treats. Since the treats won’t spread or rise much, you can be creative with your designs.
- Bake Treats: Place the shaped dough on the lined baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown. For smaller treats, reduce baking time to avoid burning the bottoms. Once baked, remove and allow to cool completely.
- Prepare Frosting: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine peanut butter and honey. Heat in 15-second increments, stirring between each, until melted and smooth.
- Mix Frosting Base: Add the melted peanut butter and honey mixture to the cornstarch. Stir gently until just combined to form a thick frosting base.
- Adjust Frosting Consistency: Slowly add hot water, one tablespoon at a time, until the frosting reaches your desired consistency. Add more water for a thinner frosting suitable for piping.
- Decorate Treats: Transfer the frosting to a piping bag and pipe decorative designs onto each cooled dog treat. This adds a tasty and attractive finish.
- Frost Additional Layer: Optionally, frost the treats with the peanut butter and honey mixture again for an extra enticing flavor layer for your dog’s enjoyment.
Notes
- Ensure the peanut butter you use does not contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.
- Cooling the treats completely before frosting helps the frosting adhere better.
- The dough will be sticky and firm; using flour on your hands or surface will help manage this during rolling.
- These treats can be stored in an airtight container for up to two weeks or frozen for longer storage.
- You can substitute potato starch or arrowroot powder for cornstarch in the frosting if needed.
