Description

This Mixed Berry Crisp is a warm, comforting dessert featuring a medley of fresh berries baked under a crunchy oat and brown sugar topping. Sweetened lightly and accented with a hint of lemon and cinnamon, it’s perfect served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a delightful treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Berry Mixture

  • 6 cups mixed fresh berries (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries)
  • â…“ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1½ tablespoons fresh lemon juice (from 1 lemon)
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon (optional)

Oat Topping

  • ¼ cup (½ stick) cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup rolled oats
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt

To Serve

  • Vanilla ice cream (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 400°F (205°C) and place a rack in the center position to ensure even baking.
  2. Prepare Berry Mixture: In a large bowl, gently combine the mixed berries with granulated sugar, sea salt, all-purpose flour, fresh lemon juice, and cinnamon if using. Toss carefully to coat the berries without crushing them and transfer the mixture into a 2-quart baking dish or pie pan.
  3. Make Oat Topping: In a medium bowl, combine the cold cubed unsalted butter, brown sugar, flour, rolled oats, and sea salt. Using your hands, mix these ingredients together until a crumbly dough forms that resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Assemble Crisp: Evenly scatter the oat topping mixture over the berry layer in the baking dish, covering the fruit as much as possible to form an even crust.
  5. Bake: Place the assembled dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 35 minutes, or until the berries are bubbling and the oat topping turns golden brown and crisp.
  6. Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly. Serve warm in bowls, optionally topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to complement the tart berries and sweet topping.

Notes

  • Use fresh berries for best flavor; you can substitute frozen berries but thaw and drain excess liquid before using.
  • If cinnamon is not preferred, it can be omitted without greatly affecting the overall taste.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend and ensure oats are certified gluten-free.
  • The lemon juice adds brightness and balances sweetness; do not skip it if possible.
  • You can swap vanilla ice cream for whipped cream or Greek yogurt as a lighter topping.
