Ingredients
Scale
Meatloaf Mixture
- 1 ½ pounds ground beef (85% lean)
- 1 cup mushrooms, finely chopped
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 egg
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- ¼ cup milk
- ½ cup shredded Swiss cheese
Topping
- ½ cup shredded Swiss cheese
- Optional: ketchup or brown gravy for topping
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease a loaf pan to prevent sticking.
- Sauté Vegetables: In a skillet over medium heat, sauté the chopped mushrooms, diced onion, and minced garlic for 4–5 minutes until softened and most moisture has evaporated. Remove from heat and let cool slightly to avoid cooking the meat prematurely.
- Mix Meatloaf Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, sautéed vegetable mixture, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, dried thyme, milk, and half of the shredded Swiss cheese. Mix gently until just combined to ensure a tender texture without overworking.
- Shape the Loaf: Form the mixture into a loaf shape on the prepared baking sheet or press it firmly into the loaf pan for even cooking.
- Add Cheese Topping: Sprinkle the remaining shredded Swiss cheese evenly over the top of the meatloaf for a delicious melted cheese crust.
- Bake: Place the meatloaf in the preheated oven and bake for 50–60 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C) to ensure thorough cooking.
- Rest and Serve: Remove the meatloaf from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm with optional ketchup or brown gravy for added flavor.
Notes
- You can substitute ground turkey or pork for a lighter or different flavor profile.
- Add finely chopped spinach or shredded carrots to the meat mixture for extra nutrition and moisture.
- This meatloaf pairs excellently with mashed potatoes or roasted vegetables for a complete meal.
