Ingredients
Scale
Meat and Vegetables
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 2 cups green cabbage, finely shredded
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
Seasonings and Sauces
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
Other Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 package refrigerated pizza dough or crescent roll dough
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
- Cook Aromatics: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until softened, about 3 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Brown the Ground Beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook until browned and no longer pink, then drain any excess grease to keep the mixture lean.
- Add Cabbage and Seasonings: Stir in the finely shredded cabbage, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, and dried thyme. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes until the cabbage is tender and all ingredients are well combined. Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly.
- Prepare Dough and Fill: Roll out the refrigerated dough and cut it into 6 equal squares or rectangles. Spoon a generous amount of the beef and cabbage mixture into the center of each piece of dough.
- Form Pockets: Fold the dough over the filling and pinch the edges firmly to seal each pocket. Place them seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet to prevent them from opening during baking.
- Apply Egg Wash and Toppings: Brush the tops of each dough pocket with the beaten egg for a shiny, golden finish. Sprinkle sesame seeds on top if desired for extra texture and flavor.
- Bake: Bake the cabbage burgers in the preheated oven for 18–22 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and cooked through.
- Cool and Serve: Let the baked cabbage burgers cool slightly before serving to allow the filling to set, making them easier to eat.
Notes
- These cabbage burgers can be made ahead and frozen before baking; simply thaw and bake when ready to serve.
- You can substitute ground turkey or pork for the beef if preferred or to suit dietary needs.
- Using refrigerated dough shortcuts the preparation time, but homemade dough can be used for a more artisanal touch.
