Ingredients
Scale
Meat and Vegetables
- 1 lb ribeye steak (or flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain)
- 1 medium onion (sliced)
- 1 bell pepper (sliced, optional)
Cheese and Wrappers
- 1/2 cup provolone cheese (shredded)
- 1/2 cup Cheez Whiz (optional, for classic Philly cheesesteak flavor)
- 8 egg roll wrappers
Cooking and Seasoning
- 1 tbsp olive oil (for cooking)
- 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
- Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)
- Salt and pepper (to taste)
Instructions
- Cook the Steak: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the thinly sliced ribeye or flank steak and cook for 3-4 minutes until browned and cooked through. Season with salt and pepper. Remove beef from skillet and set aside.
- Sauté Vegetables: In the same skillet, add sliced onions and bell peppers if using. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper.
- Combine Steak and Cheese: Add the cooked beef back to the skillet with onions and peppers. Stir in shredded provolone cheese and Cheez Whiz if using until melted and well combined. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.
- Assemble Egg Rolls: Lay an egg roll wrapper flat with one corner facing you. Place 2-3 tablespoons of the beef and cheese mixture in the center. Fold the bottom corner over the filling, then fold in the sides and roll tightly from bottom to top, sealing the edge with beaten egg.
- Fry Egg Rolls: Heat about 2 inches of oil in a deep pan or wok over medium-high heat. Fry egg rolls in batches for 3-4 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- Serve: Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauces like ranch, ketchup, or extra Cheez Whiz for an authentic Philly cheesesteak experience.
Notes
- Be sure to slice the steak thinly against the grain for tender bites.
- If you prefer, substitute flank steak for ribeye for a leaner option.
- Bell peppers are optional but add a nice sweetness and color.
- Use caution when frying; do not overcrowd the pan to maintain oil temperature.
- These egg rolls are best enjoyed fresh and hot for maximum crispiness.
- Leftover beef mixture can be refrigerated for up to 2 days but is best used immediately.
