Ingredients
Scale
Hot Chocolate Base
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 pinch salt
Chocolate
- 1/2 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
Toppings (Optional)
- Whipped cream
- Marshmallows
Instructions
- Prepare Cocoa Mixture: In a medium saucepan, whisk together the unsweetened cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and salt until well combined. Add a small splash of milk and whisk vigorously to form a smooth, lump-free paste.
- Add Milk and Cream: Slowly pour in the remaining whole milk and heavy cream while continuously whisking to ensure everything is fully incorporated and smooth, preventing lumps from forming.
- Heat the Mixture: Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring frequently, until the liquid is hot but not boiling. This usually takes about 8-10 minutes; be careful not to scorch the milk.
- Melt Chocolate Chips: Add the semi-sweet chocolate chips to the hot mixture. Stir continuously until all the chocolate has melted completely and the hot chocolate is silky and smooth in texture.
- Finish with Vanilla: Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. This adds deeper flavor and richness to your hot chocolate.
- Serve: Pour the hot chocolate into mugs. Top with whipped cream or marshmallows if desired, and serve immediately while warm and cozy.
Notes
- For an extra rich flavor, substitute dark chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet.
- You can replace heavy cream with half and half for a lighter version.
- Adjust the sweetness by adding more or less sugar according to your taste preference.
