Ingredients
Scale
Pastry
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
Filling
- 8 slices of salami (thin or thick cut, depending on preference)
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional, for extra flavor)
Finish
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Flour, for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to ensure the pastry doesn’t stick and bakes evenly.
- Prepare Puff Pastry: Lightly flour your work surface and roll out the puff pastry sheet to smooth it and slightly enlarge its size, making it easier to cut and fill.
- Cut Pastry: Cut the pastry into 4 equal squares to create the base for each pocket.
- Add Filling: Place 2 slices of salami onto the center of each pastry square. Add about a tablespoon or more of shredded cheese on top. Optionally, spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard beneath the salami for added flavor.
- Shape Pockets: Fold each square over to form either a triangle or rectangle, depending on your desired shape. Press the edges firmly with a fork to seal the pockets and prevent filling from leaking.
- Apply Egg Wash: Brush the tops of the pastry pockets with the beaten egg, which will help them develop a beautiful golden-brown color during baking.
- Bake: Arrange the pockets on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15–20 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the pockets from the oven and allow them to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy them warm for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- You can substitute the salami with other deli meats like pepperoni or ham if preferred.
- For a spicier kick, add some crushed red pepper flakes to the cheese filling.
- Ensure the pastry is well chilled before baking to achieve a flakier texture.
- These pockets can be made ahead and reheated in the oven to maintain crispiness.
- For a vegetarian version, replace salami with sautéed mushrooms or spinach.
