Description
A savory and comforting breakfast dish featuring a flaky crescent roll crust topped with creamy sausage gravy and melted cheddar and mozzarella cheeses, perfect for a hearty morning meal.
Ingredients
Scale
Crust
- 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough
Sausage Gravy
- 0.5 pound ground breakfast sausage
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 0.75 cup whole milk
- 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
Toppings
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 0.5 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- Chopped fresh parsley (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare crust: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or sheet pan. Unroll crescent roll dough and press it evenly into the dish, sealing the seams to form a crust. Bake for 8 minutes until lightly golden.
- Cook sausage: While the crust is baking, cook the ground breakfast sausage in a skillet over medium heat until browned and crumbled, about 5-7 minutes. Do not drain the grease as it adds flavor to the gravy.
- Make sausage gravy: Sprinkle the all-purpose flour over the cooked sausage and stir continuously for 1 minute to cook the flour. Slowly whisk in the whole milk and continue stirring until the gravy thickens, about 3 to 5 minutes. Season with 0.25 teaspoon black pepper evenly throughout.
- Assemble pizza: Spread the hot sausage gravy evenly over the pre-baked crescent roll crust to create a creamy base.
- Add cheeses: Sprinkle 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese and 0.5 cup shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the sausage gravy layer.
- Bake final dish: Return the assembled pizza to the oven and bake for an additional 8 to 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly golden.
- Garnish and serve: Remove from oven and optionally garnish with chopped fresh parsley. Let it cool slightly before slicing into 12 squares to serve warm.
Notes
- For a spicier kick, consider using spicy breakfast sausage.
- Do not drain the sausage grease when making the gravy to retain flavor and moisture.
- Make sure to seal the crescent roll seams well to avoid leaking gravy.
- This dish is great for brunch and can be paired with fresh fruit or a light salad.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
