Banana Bread Syrup Ingredients
- 1 ripe banana
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 pinch ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 pinch salt
Instructions
- Mash the Banana: Peel and mash one ripe banana until smooth, yielding about 1/2 cup of mashed banana. This will be the base of your syrup, adding natural sweetness and flavor.
- Melt the Butter: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter carefully to avoid browning it.
- Dissolve Sugar: Stir in 1/2 cup packed brown sugar into the melted butter and let it dissolve and start to bubble, forming a rich caramel-like base.
- Add Spices and Banana: Incorporate the mashed banana, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and a pinch of ground nutmeg into the saucepan. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes to blend flavors.
- Add Water and Simmer: Pour in 1/2 cup of water, reduce the heat to low, and let the mixture simmer gently for 5 to 6 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking and to thicken the syrup.
- Finish the Syrup: Remove the pan from heat and stir in 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract and a pinch of salt to enhance the syrup’s depth of flavor.
- Cool and Store: Allow the syrup to cool slightly before using. Transfer to an airtight jar and store it in the refrigerator for up to 5 days for best freshness.
Notes
- Use a ripe banana for maximum natural sweetness and flavor.
- Adjust the amount of cinnamon and nutmeg to taste if you prefer a stronger spice flavor.
- This syrup is excellent poured warm over pancakes, waffles, or ice cream.
- Store leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator and reheat gently before serving.
- If the syrup thickens too much upon cooling, stir in a little warm water to reach desired consistency.
