Ingredients
Scale
For the cake:
- 1 box chocolate cake mix
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 3 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the filling:
- 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
- 1 cup evaporated milk
- 1 cup caramel sauce
For the topping:
- 1 1/2 cups shredded coconut
- 1 cup chopped pecans
- 1 1/2 cups whipped topping
- 1/2 cup chocolate syrup
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish thoroughly to prevent sticking.
- Mix Cake Batter: In a large bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Beat the ingredients together until the batter is smooth and no lumps remain.
- Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish. Bake according to the package instructions, usually for 30 to 35 minutes, until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Poke Holes in Cake: Once the cake is out of the oven and slightly cooled but still warm, use the back of a wooden spoon to poke evenly spaced holes all over the surface of the cake. This allows the filling to soak in deeply.
- Prepare and Pour Filling: In a separate bowl, mix the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and caramel sauce until fully combined. Pour this mixture evenly over the cake, making sure it seeps into the holes you made earlier.
- Cool the Cake: Allow the cake to cool completely to room temperature so the filling sets well before adding the toppings.
- Add Toppings: Evenly spread the whipped topping over the cooled cake. Sprinkle the shredded coconut and chopped pecans evenly on top for texture and flavor.
- Drizzle Chocolate Syrup: Finish by drizzling the chocolate syrup over the top for added sweetness and a decorative touch. Slice and serve!
Notes
- Using warm cake when poking holes ensures the filling soaks better.
- Allowing the cake to cool completely before frosting prevents the whipped topping from melting.
- For a richer caramel flavor, consider using homemade caramel sauce.
- Chilled cake slices taste better and hold shape well when refrigerated after assembly.
- Substitute nuts with walnuts if preferred or omit for nut allergies.
